TAKKAK TAKKAK – "Garang" (dir. Brandon Tay)
Released by Nyege Nyege Tapes
For Garang, I wanted to explore the mask as a shifting surface — something that carries cultural memory but also mutates through context, performance, and media. I drew from Southeast and East Asian mask traditions, alongside influences from tokusatsu, sentai heroes, and meme aesthetics, reflecting the hybrid nature of Takkak Takkak’s collaboration between Indonesian and Japanese artists.
As a Singaporean living between cultures, the blending of the traditional and contemporary feels familiar to me — less like a contradiction and more like a daily condition. I approached the mask as a portal — into transformation, play, and the unspoken — shaped through 3D animation and generative AI.
