Hulubalang is a musical project by Gabber Modus Operandi co-founder @Kasimyn which interrogates Indonesia's history of colonisation. My contribution is creating a visual accompaniment for performance, where we explore how to visualize “post-colonial hauntology”, a space in which the past is reinterpreted by the atemporal lens of generative ai, and the subjectivities of the colonialized are haunted by absences yet to be confronted.

First using CLIP techniques to analyze and process Kasimyn’s archives of Dutch colonial photography, I then translate the resulting prompts into stable diffusion, creating a series of landscapes and figures which are then removed via background subtraction technologies, resulting only in the specters where these imagined subjects are. Synthetic Feelings, anonymous sacrifices. The project is ongoing.
